Mauritius declares emergency over oil spill
The island of Mauritius declared environmental emergency due to oil spill caused by Japanese owned ship that was stranded off the coast days ago. The MV Wakashio of Japanese companies Nagashiki Shipping Ltd and Okiyo Maritime Corporation was on its way from Brazil to Singapore carrying 4,000 tonnes of fuel. The ship ran aground on July 25, 2020.
The French Island of Reunion is the closest to Mauritius. The Island of Reunion is a major military base of France in the Indian Ocean. India conducted joint patrols with the French Navy, CORPAT (Coordinated Patrols) for the first time from the Reunion Island in March 2020.
The Agalega Islands of Mauritius has been leased to the Indian military for development of strategic assets. The island is located to the north of Mauritius island.
KV Kamath committee: Names announced
RBI has announced the names of the members of the KV Kamath committee.
The committee will submit recommendation on the financial parameters to the central bank.
KV Kamath is the former head of the New Development Bank set up by the BRICS.
The other members of the committee will be Diwakar Gupta, TN Manoharan, and Ashvin
Exim Bank extends line of credit to Mozambique
Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) has extended a USD 250-million line of credit (LOC) to Mozambique for improving power supply quality in the country.
With the signing of this LOC Agreement, Exim Bank to date has extended 14 LOCs to Mozambique, taking their total value to USD 772.44 million.
China claims half of Tajikistan
China has debt-trapped Tajikistan, and now it is claiming 45% of its land.
It has claimed the Pamir region of Tajikistan that accounts for 45 per cent of Tajik territory. In line with its modus operandi to stake a claim on foreign territories, Beijing has started with historical revisionism.
Dushanbe owes Beijing $1.2 Billion in debt out of its total foreign debt of 2.9 billion US dollars.
Tawazun to build satellite centre with Airbus
Abu Dhabi state defence and security entity Tawazun will build a satellite assembly, integration and testing centre with Airbus in the UAE’s oasis city of Al Ain.
The centre also intends to manufacture components for small to medium-sized communication, navigation and hyperspectral satellites weighing between 50 and 250 kilograms.
Pentagon awards ULA and SpaceX $653 million
The U.S. Air Force has awarded United Launch Alliance (ULA) and Elon Musk’s SpaceX $653 million in combined military launch contracts in the Pentagon’s next-generation, multibillion- dollar launch capability program.
The contracts are for launch service orders beginning in 2022.
ULA will receive a contract for approximately 60% while Musk’s SpaceX, will receive approximately 40%.
Submarine OFC to be inaugurated
PM Narendra Modi will inaugurate and dedicate the submarine Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) connecting Chennai and Port Blair.
The submarine cable will also connect Port Blair to Swaraj Dweep, Little Andaman, Car Nicobar, Kamorta, Great Nicobar, Long Island and Rangat.
It will enable the delivery of faster and more reliable mobile and landline telecom services.
