KVIC set to open first Silk Training Center
Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIc) is set to open the first of its kind Training cum Production Center of Silk in the tribal village of Chullyu in Arunachal Pradesh.

Conceived just six months ago, the center will be launched in the first week of September 2020. The KVIC has refurbished and converted a dilapidated school building into the training cum production center.

India to participate in the Kavkaz exercise
India is ready to participate in the Russian Kavkaz 2020 strategic command-post exercise.

A tri-service contingent with 150 Army personnel and from Air Force and Navy will be heading to
Astrakhan in Southern Russia for the exercise.

It is scheduled for Sept 15-26, 2020 and there will be participation from 18 countries including countries who are part of SC as well as China and Pakistan.

Suresh Angadi inaugurates Malgudi Museum
Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi virtually inaugurated Malgudi

Museum at Arasalu in Karnataka’s Shivamogga.

The old station building at Arasalu has been converted into a museum.

It has been renovated keeping with ‘Malgud theme in mind.

The Mysore Divisional Railway has funded it.

Indian Railways introduces OHE Inspection app
Indian Railways has rolled out an application called “OHE Inspection With the help of this app, the Railways will quickly find out the problem in train delay and it will get it fixed as soon as possible.

The OHE Inspection app will allow capturing real-time OHE (Overhead Equipment) defects as well as send alerts.

The app has been rolled out on a Pan India basis.

Future Brand Index 2020: Reliance ranked 2nd
Mukesh Ambani’s oil-to-telecom conglomerate Reliance Industries has been ranked second biggest brand after Apple on the Future Brand Index 2020.

The Future Brand Index is a global perception study that reorders PwC’s Global Top 100 Companies by Market Cap on perception strength rather than financial strength.

The 2020 list is topped by Apple, while Samsung is ranked third.

India Water Resources Information System
The Ministry of Jal Shakti has launched a new version of the India Water Resources Information System (India-WRIS) with new functionalities and features

Open to the public, and accessible through the web portal it contains information related to water resources.

The Ministry of Jal Shakti, under the National Hydrology Project, launched the first version in July 2019.

“Amazing Ayodhya”: Book by Neena Rai
Coinciding with the Ram temple ‘bhoomi pujan publishing house Bloomsbury announced their
the latest book that will shed light on the history of Ayodhya.

Titled “Amazing Ayodhya” the book by Neena Rai promises to offer “authentic information” about the city.

Mauritius declares emergency over oil spill
The island of Mauritius declared environmental emergency due to oil spill caused by Japanese owned ship that was stranded off the coast days ago. The MV Wakashio of Japanese companies Nagashiki Shipping Ltd and Okiyo Maritime Corporation was on its way from Brazil to Singapore carrying 4,000 tonnes of fuel. The ship ran aground on July 25, 2020.

The French Island of Reunion is the closest to Mauritius. The Island of Reunion is a major military base of France in the Indian Ocean. India conducted joint patrols with the French Navy, CORPAT (Coordinated Patrols) for the first time from the Reunion Island in March 2020.

The Agalega Islands of Mauritius has been leased to the Indian military for development of strategic assets. The island is located to the north of Mauritius island.

KV Kamath committee: Names announced
RBI has announced the names of the members of the KV Kamath committee.

The committee will submit recommendation on the financial parameters to the central bank.

KV Kamath is the former head of the New Development Bank set up by the BRICS.

The other members of the committee will be Diwakar Gupta, TN Manoharan, and Ashvin

Exim Bank extends line of credit to Mozambique
Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) has extended a USD 250-million line of credit (LOC) to Mozambique for improving power supply quality in the country.

With the signing of this LOC Agreement, Exim Bank to date has extended 14 LOCs to Mozambique, taking their total value to USD 772.44 million.

China claims half of Tajikistan
China has debt-trapped Tajikistan, and now it is claiming 45% of its land.

It has claimed the Pamir region of Tajikistan that accounts for 45 per cent of Tajik territory. In line with its modus operandi to stake a claim on foreign territories, Beijing has started with historical revisionism.

Dushanbe owes Beijing $1.2 Billion in debt out of its total foreign debt of 2.9 billion US dollars.

Tawazun to build satellite centre with Airbus
Abu Dhabi state defence and security entity Tawazun will build a satellite assembly, integration and testing centre with Airbus in the UAE’s oasis city of Al Ain.

The centre also intends to manufacture components for small to medium-sized communication, navigation and hyperspectral satellites weighing between 50 and 250 kilograms.

Pentagon awards ULA and SpaceX $653 million
The U.S. Air Force has awarded United Launch Alliance (ULA) and Elon Musk’s SpaceX $653 million in combined military launch contracts in the Pentagon’s next-generation, multibillion- dollar launch capability program.

The contracts are for launch service orders beginning in 2022.

ULA will receive a contract for approximately 60% while Musk’s SpaceX, will receive approximately 40%.

Submarine OFC to be inaugurated
PM Narendra Modi will inaugurate and dedicate the submarine Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) connecting Chennai and Port Blair.

The submarine cable will also connect Port Blair to Swaraj Dweep, Little Andaman, Car Nicobar, Kamorta, Great Nicobar, Long Island and Rangat.

It will enable the delivery of faster and more reliable mobile and landline telecom services.

India extends Line of Credit to Maldives

India has extended Line of Credit worth 18 million US dollars to the Govt of Maldives forthe expansion of fishing facilities at Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO).

The project envisages investment in fish collection and storage facilities and the setting up of a tuna cooked plant.

It is part of the 800 million US dollars line of credit offered by India.

10-acre food park to be set up at Vedasanthoor

Tamilnadu CM Edapadi K Palanisamy announced that a food park will soon be set up in 10-acre premises at Vedansathoor in Dindigul district Tamilnadu.

NIDM and IMD organize a webinar Series

National Institute of Disaster Management in collaboration with India Meteorological Department organized a webinar series on “Hydro-Meteorological Hazards Risk Reduction.

‘Bangas Awaam Mela’ held in Handwara

Locals in Handwara town celebrated the first year of abrogation of Article 370 by organizing a two-day festival “Bangas Awaam Mela”

The Annual Festival saw the participation of hundreds of Gujars, Bakarwals and other Kashmiri sightseers from Kupwara, Tangdhar and Handwara.

The Mela was conducted over 2 days commencing on August 3 with the grand finale on August 4, 2020.

First Snow Leopard Conservation Centre of India

The Uttarakhand State Government is to develop India’s first Snow Leopard Conservation centre of India. The centre is to be developed by the Uttarakhand forest department and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

A number of snow leopards have been spotted in the districts of Pithoragarh and Uttarkashi. However, the actual figures are unknown. So far, the state government has concluded that there are 86 snow leopards in the state.

The step is to promote winter tourism in the state. The state is also in the process of developing six city forests to expand the green area in the cities. This is to be achieved in city forests in Kumaon region, four in hilly districts and two in plains.

Secure Himalaya is another project being operated in India to conserve Snow Leopard. It is funded by the Global Environment Facility-United Nations Development Programme. The programme is now being operated in four states/UTs namely Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim and Uttarakhand.

CHRI Report on Slavery

Recently, the Commonwealth Human Right Initiative (CHRI) and Walk Free (an international anti-slavery organization) released a report on slavery on the occasion of World Day Against Trafficking in persons (30th July)

•The report: It assessed the progress made by Commonwealth countries on the promises made in 2018 to end modern slavery by 2030 and achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (target 8.7) of ending forced labor, human trafficking, and Child labor

commonwealth countries account for about 40% of people living in the condition of modern slavery in the world

India Specific Outcome

India has no national coordination body or national Action plan in place to deal with modern-day slavery

• India accounted for one-third of all child brides in the world.

Steps Taken by India

Constitution provision

• Article 21 – deals with the Right to life and personal liberty

•Article 23 – of the constitution prohibits forced labour

China’s Presence water Ecuador water

Recently Ecuador has expressed an official discomfort  over the sighting of flotilla of 260 mostly Chinese fishing vessels near the Galopagos archipelago ( a part near Ecuador )

Reason: Chinese ships are frequent in Ecuador’s water during august month of the year as the cold Humboldt Current brings in nutrient that lead to high congregation of marine species   

 UK considering a coin to commemorate Gandhi

Britain is considering minting a coin to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi, amid growing interest in recognizing the contributions of people from the Black, Asian and other minority ethnic communities.

Gandhi advocated for non-violence throughout his life and played a key role in India’s struggle for independence.

His birthday, Oct. 2, is observed as the International Day of Non-Violence.

2. Pakistan’s PM unveils new political map

Pakistan PM Imran Khan has unveiled a ‘new political map’ of Pakistan that includes Indian illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (lIOJ&K) as part of the country’s territory for the first time.

Furthermore, the new map also shows Siachen as a part of Pakistan.

The Indian government has described it as political absurdity.

The map also includes parts of Western Gujarat.

3. DD Assam 24×7 channel launched

Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar has launched DD Assam 24×7 channel through video conferencing. It was necessary for the State to have a new channel.

All the North-Eastern states have state-specific Doordarshan channels which can be viewed anywhere in India.

Doordarshan Free Dish offers 104 channels free of cost for lifetime and people need to just get a set-top box.

• In the year 1972 Stockholm Declaration on Environment was signed of which India was also the one among the various signatories. Then in the year 1974 and 1981 India enacted a law to control water and air pollution respectively

1st ever Vyapar Mala Express train

  • Northern Railway ran first-ever Vyapar Mala Express train on 1 August 2020. This train destined for Jirania in Tripura has 46 wagons.
  • Wheat was loaded in 34 wagons at Guniana station of Firozpur Division by Food Corporation of India and in the remaining Rice and Pulses have been loaded.
  • This is an express service where the piece-meal stock will reach its destination in a shorter time.

UAE: 1st country to produce nuclear energy

  • As the Barakah Nuclear Plant’s 1st Unit got operational and UAE became the first country in the Arab World to produce nuclear energy.
  • The new plant is part of the UAE’s graph to become less reliant on oil and gas, the current source of the vast majority of its energy.
  • UAE is among the world’s biggest fossil fuel producers.

Iran launches underground ballistic missiles

It was launched as part of a drill that targeted a replica American aircraft carrier in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has developed and stored some of its ballistic missiles underground to protect them from being destroyed or seized by enemy countries.

ADB signs $200 million financing deal with Reliance
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed a dollar 200 million financing deal with the Reliance Bangladesh LNG and Power Limited (RBLPL).
It has been signed to build and operate a 718-megawatt combined-cycle gas-fired power plant in Bangladesh.
The project will ease ongoing energy shortages and drive further private sector investments in the country’s power sector
