1. Russia, Turkey sign deal

• Russia and Turkey have signed a contract on the delivery of the 2nd batch of formidable S-400 air defense missile system.

• The sides are now discussing the financial arrangement of implementing the contract.

• Russia and Turkey signed a loan agreement for the supply of S-400 air defense systems in Sept 2017.

• This resulted in the US suspending deliveries of F-35 fighter jets to its NATO ally.

2. ‘Abhilash’ receives International Award

• A short film based on lockdown titled ‘Abhilash’ has bagged an International Award at the ‘Bengal Lockdown online film Festival’ in the Best Social Message Film category.

• The festival, organized under the supervision of organizer Subhamapurva, witnessed contest from around 135 films from around the world.

• Out of these titles, only 50 titles from 20 countries were officially nominated.

3. Country’s longest ‘ropeway over a river

• The Assam Govt. has inaugurated a 1.8-km- long ropeway over the Brahmaputra, connecting Guwahati to North Guwahati.

• It is the longest ropeway on a river in India. Built at a cost of Rs 56 crore, it comprises of two cabins, each with a capacity of 30 passengers and one operator.

• It takes eight minutes to traverse the entire length of the ropeway.

4. Government of India and AlIB Sign Agreement

• The Govt. of India, Govt. of Maharashtra, Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation, and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AlIB) have signed a loan agreement.

• It has been signed for a $500 million Mumbai Urban Transport Project-ll to improve the network capacity, service quality, and safety of the suburban railway system in Mumbai.

• It is expected to increase network capacity in the region.

5. Zen Technologies gets patent from UK

• Zen Technologies Limited has been granted a patent by UK patent office for containerized tubular shooting range (CTSR).

• The valuable patent will give the company an exclusive right to access in many foreign markets.

• .CTSR is range-in-a-container solution, where security forces can train their personnel rapidly and efficiently than conventional ranges.

6. National Council for Transgender Persons

• The Centre has constituted a National Council for Transgender Persons through a notification. The Social Justice and Empowerment

• Minister will be the ex-officio Chairperson and Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment will be ex-officio Vice- Chairperson.

• It will advise the Centre on the formulation of policies and programs, with respect to transgender persons.

1. US signs deal to sell F-16 jets to Taiwan
• The United States has signed a deal to sell 66 of the latest model F-16 jets to Taiwan amid the
ongoing tensions between the Washington and Beijing
• The F-16 jets have been built by Lockheed Martin Corp.
• The sale was first floated in 2019 and will reportedly be completed by the end of 2026. As part
of the announcement, 90 jets will be sold to Taiwan.

2. Navroz: Parsi New Year 2020
• Parsi New Year, also known as Navroz or , is celebrated to mark the beginning of the Iranian
calendar.
• The tradition is believed to have been celebrated for the past 3,000 years and is observed by
Iranians and the Parsi community around the world.
• The most prominent Navroz celebrations take place in Maharashtra and Gujarat in India.
• This year it was celebrated on August 16, 2020.

3. Railways constructing tallest pier bridge
• Indian Railways is constructing the world’s tallest pier bridge in Manipur.
• The bridge which is being constructed across river ljai is an engineering marvel because the
tallest pier height will be 141 meter.
• It will surpass the existing record of 139 meter of Mala – Rijeka viaduct, Montenegro in Europe.
The total estimated cost of the bridge is Rs 280 cr and will be completed by March 2022.

4. Legendary vocalist Pandit Jasraj dies
• Indian classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj passed away in August 2020.
• He was an Indian classical vocalist, belonging to the Mewati Gharana.
• With a musical career spanning more than 80 years, he was bestowed with numerous major
awards including Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.
• His performances of classical and semi classical vocals have become albums and film
soundtracks.

5. MCX to launch India’s first bullion index
• Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) is all set to launch the country’s first bullion index,
Bulldex, on August 24, 2020.
• The bullion index, Bulldex, being launched by MCX is the sixth product in bullion complex with 1-
kg gold, 100-gm goldmini, 8-gm gold guinea and 1-gm gold peta, while the Options on Futures
on 1-kg gold is already in place.

6. New bus stand dedicated to Madan Lal Dhingra
• Haryana CM Manohar Lal, on 17 August 2020, dedicated the new bus stand in Karnal to Martyr
Madan Lal Dhingra.
• He also unveiled the martyr’s statue at the bus stand on his martyrdom day.
• Madan Lal Dhingra was an independence activist, who, while studying in England, had
assassinated a British official, William Hutt Curzon Wyllie.

1. Mauritius declares state of emergency
• The Indian Ocean island of Mauritius has declared a state of environmental emergency after a
Japanese-owned ship that ran aground offshore began spilling tons of fuel.
• The satellite images showed a dark slick spreading in the turquoise waters near environmental
areas that the government called very sensitive.
• The ship was carrying near 4,000 tons of fuel and cracks have appeared in its hull.

2. Khaje; “Harmal Chilli’ get Gl tag
• Goa’s traditional festive sweet dish ‘Khaje spicy Harmal Chilli and Myndoli Banana (Moira
Banana) have obtained Geographical Indication (GI) tag in last three months.
• Earlier, the State’s popular ‘Cashew Feni’ and ‘Khola Red Chilli, had also obtained Gl tag.
• The Myndoli Banan an important fruit crop, grown in the villages of Pernem, Bicholim and
Bardez taluka.

3. “Priority pathogens” found in Yamuna water
• A research paper from IT Delhi has shown that the river Yamuna harbored some of the
multidrug-resistant bacteria that a World Health Organization (WHO) report had red flagged in
2017.
• The paper has been published in the Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering.
• The research paper notes that bad sewage management was the main source of their entry into
the river.

4. Odisha govt. approves drinking water projects
• The Odisha cabinet has approved 4 mega drinking water projects in Koraput, Malkangiri,
Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Gajapati and Cuttack Districts worth Rs 800.27 cr.
• These will provide drinking water to 6.07 lakh additional population in 911 villages in these
districts
• The cabinet also approved as many as 20o proposals focusing on industrial development,
irrigation among others.

5. He-enhanced cool bright stars discovered
• A team of scientists from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (1IA), has discovered He(helium)-
enhanced cool bright stars among the metal-rich sample of Omega Centauri.
• This work, a result of the spectroscopic survey conducted of this cluster, determines the Heabundance of these stars for the first time and has been published in The Astrophysical Journal
